FORA.tv Launches Event Subscriptions

The new video service FORA.tv is out, and all those who wish to learn something useful, should head there.

FORA is basically a video streaming service, a lot like Netflix, but it doesn’t stream movies or TV shows.FORA.tv

Based in San Francisco, FORA.tv offers users the chance to view thousands of hours of archived footage shot at various conferences, events and university lectures dedicated to the expression of game-changing ideas, with different events being available at different price-points (including free) and footage on such topics as business, politics, culture, science and technology.

Some videos are entirely free, and embeddable, as the site’s own Conference Blog ably demonstrates. The company describes the site as “the Web’s largest collection of conference and event videos” – It’s tempting to quibble, depending on whether poor quality pushes YouTube out of the running, but even if it doesn’t FORA’s cataloging by subject and search-ability makes it an invaluable resource for this kind of thing.

Well, now there’s a whole new way to watch, interact with and share the videos – And it may be the change that puts FORA.tv over the top in terms of user pick-up. The site is now offering what it’s calling “Front Row Membership,” an monthly (or annual) subscription that offers free access to the site’s pay-per-view videos (Admittedly, after a waiting period of 60 days of them being posted to the site; the live streams that are PPV will still require additional money, albeit at a 20 percent discount from the regular rate), ad-free viewing and downloads of selected videos so that subscribers can watch them on the go. All this for $9.99 per month, or $99.99 for a full year.

According to the site’s “About” page, the company “believe[s] that there are brilliant ideas expressed everyday, everywhere, and we don’t want you to miss them,” which is why FORA has gathered the web’s largest collection of unmediated video drawn from top conferences, universities, and public forums.
