Following an announcement in June 2012 during E3, Sony has finally released its first Wonderbook titled “Book of Spells”. Sony’s attempt to get muggles interested in buying its video gaming devices and get kids into reading (on the screen) may actually work since the Augmented Reality (AR) experience seems to be well thought and executed nicely.
Wonderbook works via a physical book filled with QR & hieroglyphics styled codes that are captured by Sony’s Eye Camera to initiate AR and the move controller to let you interact with that AR. The entire experience in on the TV screen with you in the middle of it.
The book + game out now, is set in the world of Harry Potter. The Book of Spells by Miranda Goshawk is 200 years old and kept in the Restricted Section of the Hogwarts library. As a student at Hogwarts, chapter by chapter you will be able to read about and practise a variety of spells, picking up valuable experiences and lessons along the way. The book was written exclusively by JK Rowling thus it is full of histories of different spells and where they were discovered or funny, entertaining things that happened with them.
Amazon UK is already selling the Book of Spells Standard Edition for £22.99 and the Starter Pack edition for £49.99. Those who have managed a household free of the PS3 gaming device till today can get everything for £199.
BBC has announced their Walking With Dinosaurs as its first Wonderbook early next year. There are also rumours that the Muppets and Toy Story will get their own wonderbooks too.
